September on the Blog: September Doesn't Mean the End of the Fun

There’s something about September. Like the first day of the week, a fresh page in a notebook, or the beginning of a year, September feels like a new beginning - an opportunity to take stock, change course or simply start again.

I don’t know whether it’s the chaos of the summer holidays that has me wanting to do a complete overhaul on my home and lifestyle come September, but this month I’m thinking about new routines I can implement to help me keep on top of things now that schedules are tight again, work and school have resumed, and the need to have things planned is key! The thing is, I don’t want to lose the joy that the summer holidays always bring. Slow mornings, quality time with the kids, exploring local hidden gems….I truly believe that if I can get my day-to-day in order then I can use the free time we have when work and school ends to still do those things. I don’t want my weekends to be used playing catch up on chores so that I’m ready to start the monotony of a Monday-Friday again. I want to play!

"I want to play!"

So what things am I implementing? Habits. Morning habits. Evening habits. Weekly habits. We’re not talking about endless lists of chores that mean you’re never going to get to the end of it. We’re talking bare minimum. What do I have to do to keep things running? For me…a daily load of laundry put on in the morning and folded at night. The dishwasher emptied in the morning and re-stacked to put on. A quick ‘pick up’ before dinner time where the kids are involved in putting their toys away before we sit down to eat. Meal planning the week ahead and prepping what I can weekly. This stuff sounds so basic, but it’s these things that my time gets filled with when I let the habits slip. I don’t want to spend another Saturday of my life washing and folding 6 loads of laundry because I forgot to stick one on in the morning during the week…what a waste!

I want to spend my September holding onto that sense of adventure from the summer holidays, not regretting that I chose to do something with my family rather than catch up on laundry. September doesn’t need to be the end of the fun, so let’s keep having it.
